In recent history, the Huracan Performante set a new Nรผrburgring Nordschleife production car record in 2016. The lap time of 6:52:01 stayed at the top of the records chart for more than a year, ending in September 2017. Before that, the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 SV had set the record in 2015. The Aventador delivered a sub-seven minute lap time. In 2018, the top spot returned to Lamborghini once more. Learn all about the record-setting Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.
Setting a New Record for Speed
The all-new Lamborghini Aventador SVJ was set to be unveiled at Monterey Car Week in August 2018, but the team had a surprise in store for fans. The newest sports car from the “House of the Raging Bull” was instead going to make a debut at the Nรผrburgring Nordschleife one month earlier, in July of 2018. It was here that history was made a new lap record for production cars was set.
The vehicle was camouflaged and driven by the official Lamborghini driver, Marco Mapelli. Lamborghini’s Research and Development team were ready to put it all on the track. Pirelli technicians played a great role in this feat, as well, thanks to their extensive tire support. The highly skilled driver took the brand new vehicle to its limits. Both driver and vehicle superbly took on the challenge of the 20.6-kilometer track and aced it. By the end of the day, the new lap record for production cars stood at 6:44.97 minutes. This was a truly inspiring performance.
What Is In a Name?
“The Aventador SVJ takes the Jota suffix, following the Lamborghini tradition for denoting a car’s track-focused talent. This new car is the convergence of Lamborghini technologies to produce a super sports car that transcends current performance benchmarks,” explained Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman & CEO.
Design and Performance of the Newest Lamborghini Sports Car
The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ benefits from having an excellent weight to power ratio. This component helps the driver take the vehicle to record-setting speeds. Lightweight materials and a very precise design give the Aventador SVJ a weight to power ratio of 1.98 kg/hp. This allows for even higher power output. The Research and Development team for this Lamborghini sports car have also mastered the patented ALA 2.0 active aerodynamics system with aero vectoring. This guarantees the best possible handling as well as the best downforce. In addition, the team has designed all new aerodynamic features that are specific to the SVJ. These components play a big part in the record-setting pace for the new vehicle.
Optimized ALA Performance and Engineering
The performance of the ALA system in the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ was optimized using CFD simulation. The vehicle requires exceptional downforce, which made it necessary for the engineering team to rework both the active and passive dynamic systems. Their hard work paid off as the changes were successful. The configuration was also re-engineered to enhance the four-wheel drive system, improving driver control and handling of the super fast vehicle. The rear wheel steering has also been enhanced to improve performance as well. Put together, the changes led to the creation of a new lap speed record.
Lamborghini aficionados and race fans all over the world are eager to see what the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ does next. What other records might this incredibly fast vehicle break? How long will this Lamborghini sports car maintain its place at the top of the record speed chart? Only time will tell, and we can’t wait to find out.
